Sheriff’s Department: Speeding & Cell Phone Use, A Deadly Combination

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies, in trying to use a proactive approach to the dangers of speeding, issued a total of 89 citations within a 24 hour-period starting July 27.

The move was part of the Speed Awareness Traffic Safety Campaign conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, which is to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through both education and enforcement.

The Highway Patrol Division understands the dangers of speeding and continuously makes it a priority to enforce the speed limit. In fact, last year speeding and illegal cell phone citations represented 90% of moving violations and are a deadly combination.” – Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose

According to the LCSO, in Illinois during 2014, speed was the reason for 32.4% of all traffic fatalities. That’s 348 deaths for the year, or one life every 25 hours. Lives can be saved by adhering to speed limits and understanding how speeding impacts a crash, say sheriff’s department officials.

“Motorists need to be aware of their speed and ensure they are always traveling within the posted speed limit,” stated Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran.

Undersheriff Ray Rose added, “The Highway Patrol Division understands the dangers of speeding and continuously makes it a priority to enforce the speed limit. In fact, last year speeding and illegal cell phone citations represented 90% of moving violations and are a deadly combination. I urge motorists to slow down, drop it and drive and stay alive.”
