According to deputies, a 2006 Chevrolet Impala, driven by a 27 year-old woman, of Chicago, was traveling northbound on Route 12.  For an unknown reason, she drove over the grass median, which separates the northbound lanes from the southbound lanes.  The Chevrolet then struck a southbound Kia Sedona, head-on, driven by a 44 year-old Round Lake Beach man.

Personnel from the Wauconda Fire Department extracted both drivers from their vehicles.

The Chicago woman operating the Chevrolet was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, via Flight for Life medical helicopter. She suffered critical injuries, according to LCSO Det. Christopher Covelli.

The driver of the Kia was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

There were three passengers in the Kia including a 39 year-old woman, a five year-old girl, and a three year-old boy, all of Round Lake Beach.  All three were transported by ambulance to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
