Kenosha Common Markets, Inc.™ is pleased to announce the success of Market Moola, an incentive program that currently provides matching funds to SNAP/EBT users who shop at Kenosha HarborMarket™.

The $2,000 that was donated to launch the program has been disbursed in just three short months. The Kenosha Common Markets Board of Directors has allocated $500 to ensure the continuation of this valuable community program, but seeks additional funders to further the positive momentem this program has started.

The last outdoor day for the 2016 Kenosha HarborMarket™ is Saturday, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will move indoors to the Rhode Center for the Arts in Kenosha starting Oct. 22, and operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Families who are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can receive up to $20 in matching funds per EBT card per market day to spend on fresh food for their families. Wooden $2 tokens are purchased at the HarborMarket info booth using an EBT card. These tokens are then used like cash at approved vendor stands that supply foods for families to consume at home such as bread, eggs, fruits and vegetables, meats, fish and poultry, dairy products, and more.

“We are fortunate to have a corporate donor like Kenall, grantors like the Kenosha Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund, and private donors support this valuable program.” said Melanie Hovey, Kenosha Common Markets board member, and SNAP/EBT coordinator for the market.

“Helping all people change their buying habits toward eating better, fresher, local foods is our goal. Market Moola encourages families on assistance to shop at HarborMarket, and allows farmers and these customers to trade directly, something people using SNAP were previously unable to do, because USDA regulations are too onerous for most independent food producers to take on.,” Hovey stated. “Currently, about $100 worth of these matching funds, by five or six families, are claimed each week. We hope others in the community will see the value of this program and help ensure its continuation by donating.”

Kenosha Common Markets, Inc.™ is a non-profit 501(c)3, private non-stock corporation whose purpose is to create and manage mixed markets in Southeastern Wisconsin, including Kenosha HarborMarket™, and Kenosha Winter HarborMarket™.
