Dr. Howard Cooper, Lake County coroner, has ruled the death of Jeffrey S. Lalond, 46, of Winthrop Harbor, a homicide.
Lalond was found shot to death Friday night, Jan. 6, in the garage of his home in the 3600 block of Creekside Court.
The coroner made the ruling late Sunday afternoon after he performed an autopsy. “It is a homicide. He died of a single gunshot,” Dr. Cooper told the You Journal.
He, however, declined to say where in his body the victim was shot or what type of gun was used, explaining that he didn’t want to jeopardize the on-going investigation by Winthrop Harbor Police and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
Winthrop Harbor police officers were dispatched to the scene at about 8:45 p.m., Friday. They found the victim in his garage with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Vista East Hospital by Winthrop Harbor paramedics and was pronounced dead after arrival.
Winthrop Harbor Police has asked the assistance of Lake County Major Crime Task Force in their investigation and to collect evidence. Anyone with information about the shooting should call Winthrop Harbor Police at 847.872.2131 or Crime Stoppers at 847.662.2222.
