A 20-year-old man, identified as David J. Graham of the 300 block of Forest Glen Drive in Round Lake Park, was shot to death Monday, March 13, while celebrating his birthday with his companions.
Lake County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Joey Gonzalez, 19, of the 300 block of Maple Lane, Round Lake, and charged him involuntary, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a sawed-off shotgun.
According to investigators, Graham, along with four other men, was celebrating his birthday earlier in the evening. Graham was driving while the others were passengers in the car. When he pulled over in the area of West Monaville Road and West Old Monaville Road in unincorporated Lake Villa, he got out of the car with Gonzalez and fired a shot into the air.
The two then got back to the car. As Graham was driving, Gonzalez was sitting in the backseat and holding the shotgun. The gun discharged hitting Graham in the head. Gonzalez then moved Graham out of the driver’s seat and drove the victim to the Northwestern Medical Outpatient Center in Grayslake, investigators said. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper has ruled that Graham died of gunshot wound, according to sheriff’s investigators.
Gonzalez is being held in Lake County Jail on a $300,000 bond with his next court hearing set for March 17. According to sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli, Gonzalez has also been charged with residential burglary in connection with an October 2016 incident in the 36000 block of North Tara Court in Ingleside.
