Five people were injured and one is in critical condition following a traffic crash in unincorported Gurnee last night, April 24.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies responding to the call, said the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the 26200 block of North Grandwood Drive. When they arrived at the scene, deputies found a 2013 Kia Rio with significant damage.
A 16-year old Waukegan boy was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation shows the Kia Rio was traveling northwest on North Grandwood Drive in the area of Lakeview Terrace, when for an unknown reason the driver left the roadway and struck a tree, according to Sgt. Christopher Covelli, Lake County Sheriff’s spokesperson.
Following the crash, a 16 year-old male from unincorporated Gurnee, fled from the vehicle on foot. He was located a short distance away by sheriff’s deputies and transported to a local hospital due to an injury sustained in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
The Waukegan teenager was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, with life-threatening injuries. He remains in critical condition. The others were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Crash investigators are working to determine if drugs, alcohol, or speed were a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit and charges are pending.
